bazaar32011.jpgNew York Shitty has been tracking a story about a proposed outdoor, evening bazaar that would run on weekends at an empty lot on West Street between Calyer and Oak in Greenpoint, and has a post about how attendees of a community meeting on Saturday report that the proposal is unpopular with a number of people in the neighborhood. One person who went to the meeting wrote: “People were understandably upset and voiced their concerns about the bazaar, however, there was quite a bit of shouting and talking over each other and the guy behind the project. I feel like this is unproductive and the guy behind the bazaar was the only one who kept his cool, despite being unprepared on some key issues (total costs of cleanup & security were 2 items residents brought up that they wanted answers for as well as presence and input of the 94th).” Another person who went to the meeting had this to say: “Folks were also concerned about increased alcohol consumption, people hanging out on stoops near the waterfront, safety, and whether or not their kids could sleep if musicians or djs played until 2am.” Another meeting about the proposal will happen tonight at 37 Greenpoint Avenue.

  1. It sounds like Aaron Broudo is open for some modifications to the plan. He’s already proposing stopping it around midnight which is fine for a weekend night in the summer…

I think this would work if they simply loose the beer tent.

There are about 10 bars within a few blocks from there if people really need to grab a glass of wine before checking out the crafts.

  2. I attended this meeting and yes while several Greenpoint residents lost their cool, there were many who didn’t loose their cool. So the guy with deep pockets didn’t loose his cool that doesn’t make the situation clear does it?
People loosing their cool live 1 to 2 blocks from the site, they are going to suddenly face loud music and noisy drunk people until 2-3 am (the ‘live music’ will stop at 10 but the beer/wine gardens – 3 of them) will continue until 2, etc…

  3. I think this could work if it is planned properly.

That said — Having a beer/wine tent is just a bad idea.

Having a sort of street fair to allow people to display food and crafts during the evenings on weekends isn’t such a bad idea.

It could turn a normally desolate part of Greenpoint into something interesting.

The light festival that occurred in the same area was fine.

Also — it’s not really a residential area right there…
If you google street view West Street and Noble you’ll see what I mean.

There is definitely a concern about a spillover into residential areas which are only a few blocks away.

Wish there was a way to approve one night and see how it goes.

  4. We can sympathize with the position he’s in but knowing what a difficult balancing act it is to do even a daytime market without music or alcohol can’t say we’re surprised that this is proving to be such an uphill battle…

  5. This is definitely stereotyping the guy trying to start up the event, but he seems to be of the Murray Hill transplant type of the Burg and Greenpoint that enjoys the artsy parts of the area, but doesn’t really bring that much to the table himself, besides the talent of making deals. It also definitely seems to sound as though it’s planning to be a mix of the flea and night event space that, if I were to be a resident of the area, not at all thrilled about. Especially since the scene over there can get really cheesy and fratty at night. But, this is the price you pay for gentrification.
