Some of you have been lucky enough to espy the flocks or wild green parrots that proliferate South Brooklyn. If you haven’t, maybe it’s because they sometimes get poached, or befall other unfortunate fates. Thus, the introduction of a bill to protect them, courtesy of City Councilmember Tony Avella, says Brooklyn Parrots. The site has info on how to get in touch with Avella to confirm your support (or, if for some reason you don’t want the little guys protected, express your lack of support) for the bill.

Maybe the bill will keep Con Ed from destroying the nests when they get in the way. I hope so.
Back to the parrots… I’ve gone to Greenwood Cemetery quite a few times just to watch the parrots, but it would be silly to pass a bill that’s parrot specific – as mentioned above, they are an invasive species (and a particularly destructive one at that) and shouldn’t get any special status above other animals of the city just because they are beautiful and fascinating to observe. Aren’t there already laws on the books protecting birds from various sorts of mischief (capturing, poisoning, etc.)?
