Bed-Stuy Banana has completed her goal. After 63 weeks and about 174 miles, she has walked and documented every single street in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The next step? Doing it all over again because, like any neighborhood, it’s always changing and has something new to offer.

  1. Good work but I am guessing what you discovered won’t last too much longer, here’s the good news. I received a tip that within the last three weeks the Bedford Stuyvesant Development Corporation also known as BSDC was created. BSDC was formed to identify, enhance, and capture value through the development and redevelopment of Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn. BSDC will be committed to providing for and forecasting economic opportunities for the residents of the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood. I’ve also heard that BSDC will aim to invest nearly$150 million into the Bedford Stuyvesant community within the next several years.

A Board Member also tells me, that BSDC will start by focusing on the revitalization of Commercial straps such as Nostrand Avenue, Fulton Street, Lewis Avenue, Malcolm X Blvd, and Marcus Gravy Blvd. Even more god news, BSDC’s Chairman is a resident of Bedford Stuyvesant.

I don’t know about you but I am extremely excited about this. I will keep you updated as information becomes available.

  2. dig the site, and the name. as a white guy who grew up w/asians only, and dated only asians, i know the term! i was an ‘egg’, my gf’s were bananas or twinkies. at one point, i had a gf who quickly became an ‘oreo’. people are idiots.

now, married to a south american, i’m not sure what i, or she, are. an empanada maybe.

  3. I agree, Brenda! I checked out her blog for the first time tonight and got thoroughly immersed in her creativity and spirit. Love the photos, entries and the ensuing dialogue. Most of all, I admire her sincere desire to really learn about and be a contributor to the Bed Stuy community she and Big Joe have adopted. Really inspiring stuff.
