While major new construction projects go up around the Navy Yard, some of the older buildings are getting spruced up as well. Work on the facade at Building Three, for example, was coming to a close when we passed by last week.

  1. First of all, that’s not even close to the ugliest building in the navy yard. But it’s a huge concrete warehouse building built in the 40’s by the navy while the country was gearing up to enter WWII- aesthetics weren’t exactly the biggest thing on their minds – nor should it have been. Still, brownstoner’s point is valid – the navy yard just spent a ton of money to replace all of the windows on this building – many of the old windows were blown out or were covered in plywood. And although you may not believe it – the building looks so much better now. Plus, I’m sure the new windows are much better insulated and therefore more energy efficient from a heating point of view, which is nice from a green point of view. Not sexy, but definitely effective.
