On Saturday, we took a field trip out to 3rd Ward, a workspace for creative professionals in East Williamsburg. The occasion was a holiday craft fair (inset) but we were able to take a tour of the 20,000-square-foot facility. Members (who pay anywhere from $30 to $60 a month) have access to wood and metal shops, audio and video studios, and computer labs. Great stuff. GMAP
I took a class in building wood furniture at Third Ward and it was a bad experience. You only got 3-5 passes to go to the shop outside of class (which makes it nearly impossible to build anything), they don’t offer much in the way of tools (they have some old routers and drills but no bits) and when I voiced complaints about the class, I found the people in charge to be really rude. Not one person in my class finished a single project.
If you want to take a class, I highly recommend SVAs cont. ed classes. They’re cheaper per class, they have a complete shop with everything you need and the staff is helpful and friendly. They also sell wood and accept delivieres so you don’t have to worry about getting materials.
Yeah, I have to say- as nice as the facility was, I’m not going to pay that kind of money to work at a woodshop. Does anyone know of any cheaper alternatives? I was going to try to rent time from some local contractors’ shops.
