Of Dumbo, that is. As if his Clocktower pad wasn’t already sweet enough, David Walentas recently had work completed on the solarium, just in time to avoid any pesky dealings with the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

  1. I like the glazed lantern but he missed an opportunity. On top of the glass pedestal one wants to see a globe perhaps with a gilded figure above. An allegorical figure such as justice, or enlightenmemt, or perhaps in this case Walentas himself pointing towards the Empire Stores, blueprints in one fist, dollars (euros?) in the other, with perhaps a graceful finger raised towards Brooklyn Heights. It could work. The building needs a top.

  2. I think the solarium is cool as shite, and I wouldn’t have stopped him from doing it if I could–it’s groovy. But it sucks that he used wretchedly wrong contemporary windows there and on the entire rest of the building. Ruined the building, actually. Like so many buildings.

Why don’t people grasp that when you remove windows with mullions (or whatever you call the things that form criss-crosses in windows) and replace them with non-divided windows, it completely screws up the building? It’s like poking the eyes out of a doll. A shame.

Still, I bet that unit with the clock is sweeeeet.
