Local blogger Tim Thomas, who writes the Q at Parkside, is raising money to refurbish the dented and aging “Flatbush Trees” at the corner of Flatbush Avenue, Ocean Avenue and Empire Boulevard. Thomas and the artist behind the sculpture, David Eppley, are seeking $10,000 for materials and equipment to build the project, which is called “Spring Comes to the Flatbush Trees.”
Eppley plans to make 1500 hexagons of varying colors and sizes using vinyl tape, with the help of 15 local middle schoolers. The kids will draw designs on the backs of each hexagon, so that each piece will be unique. Then the children will help Eppley attach the shapes to the existing cement “trunks” of the trees. The end result could look something like the mockup above. If you want to help beautify Flatbush, you can contribute to the project through its IOBY page.
