We’d be lying if we said we weren’t just a little bit irked at Mother Nature right now. While precious few rain drops have actually fallen on the Brooklyn Flea during market hours, all four Sundays to date have had the threat of rain and have been unseasonably cold. And it looks like more of the same for this weekend. Argghh! Luckily we have a hearty bunch of vendors who roll with the rain-or-shine punches to get to what’s real. The organizers of this year’s Fort Greene House Tour must also be watching the weather report closely. Both events happen Sunday. The Flea runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 176 Lafayette Avenue. Closest trains are the C and G to Washington/Clinton. Or you can take any of the number of trains that go to Atlantic Station and make the 10-minute stroll up Lafayette Avenue from there. The house tour is from noon to 5 p.m.; you can pick up your tickets in the BAM Garden at Fulton and Lafayette or at the flea market. If you’re in the neighborhood on Saturday, make sure to stop by the Habana Outpost Block Party.

UPDATE: The sun has decided to shine upon The Flea for the first time and the place is hopping. Come on down! It’s open ’til 5 o’clock.

  1. Yup, Flea was a bustling scene. Picked up some sweet vinyl, a vintage (1972) nautical map and could’ve spent much more $. A great addition to Brownstone Brooklyn, lots of smiling faces. We’ll go back often.

  2. Ok, I REALLY did just get back from the Flea, and it was quite bustling, to say the least. I bought 3 things…a little desk lamp, a canvas tote and a Christian Dior shirt. Good day. The one couple near to the front gate had SO MUCH great stuff…old bowling bags, vintage kitchenware, a couple of old vornado fans…some really nice stuff. She was selling quite briskly. I saw about 5 other purchases happening while I was in the process of mine.

The food vendors looked swamped. I wanted a snack, but the line was too long for me. I was too into shopping today. The other 2 times I had come, I came with friends and while it was awesome, I am really a better shopped when I’m alone. I had some great Iron and Wine on my Ipod to keep me company.

I wandered around the neighborhood after and there were people everywhere. I know the Ft. Greene open house tour was today also, but wow…what a great day to be walking around.

As a Park Sloper, I think it’s great to have this in Brownstone Brooklyn. I had a great walk back, winding back through 5th Avenue and then up Union to Prospect Park and then back to 7th and then to my house, and realized what an incredible thing it is to be able to wander all around these neighborhoods (walked UP Vanderbilt on my way there and noticed how nice that street is looking, especially with the new paving, bike lanes and great looking shops and bars) and just took it all in.

What a gorgeous, interconnected collection of thriving neighborhoods, each unique and filled with energy and beauty. I saw every color of the rainbow today…in the items at the Flea, in the flowers and trees and in the people.

    It’s cliche, but it’s true.

I feel really lucky to live in Brooklyn right now.

  3. Seems pretty pathetic to me thatthe number of people attending this flea is being discussed every week. Whether there are 10 or 10,000 people, it is 10 or 10,000 more people that the vendors have a chance of selling their wares to and buyers have a chance of getting something they like and need.No different then a store being open and customers sauntering in to look or buy. This flea brings excitement to the neighborhood and is good for the various other businesses, especially the restaurants that are seemingly benefiting from the influx of people.
