Hope everyone comes out of this with little or no sustaining injury. These 8 unit buildings typically have a rear fire escape providing secondary egress to each of two floor through units; therefore no need for sprinkler systems since any condo conversion didn’t necessarily require a C of O change since the use and occupancy remained the same.
It is truly sad, I feel very bad. I am a little confused though, if it is supposedly an overloaded power surge, aren’t they made with a switch that should shut off if there is too much power going through.
In any event let this be a lesson to all of us, that electricity is not a joke. A fire is about the worse thing that could happen to your home, and life.
Rebecca, the story says two people were taken to the hospital, one of whom was fighting for his life at the Cornell Burn Unit. I hope he recovers — what a horrible tragedy.
I live across the street from 392, my wife was up feeding the baby, saw the fire break out and called 911. I awoke to her screams. It was pretty intense and spread quickly, and apparently the firemen rescued two people from being burned alive. We have a video of the fire (which I won’t post out of respect for the victims), but needless to say the responders were extremely heroic for getting them out alive. I was quite a relief to see everyone else vacate the building on their own two feet. I don’t know much about sprinkler systems, but based on how the fire was roaring I’m not sure if they would have helped. It was like something out of a movie.
my god the picture itself looks scary.. i hope no one got injured in this fire.
I’m wondering why no sprinkler? Don’t you need now in 4+fam?
