Per Metro, Dumbo is the first neighborhood in the city to sport recycling bins on its sidewalks. The initiative is part of the Dumbo BID’s drive to make the neighborhood environmentally friendly; other aspects of the greenification include the instillation of 35 new bicycle racks, convincing restaurants to recycle cooking oil, and distributing canvas shopping bags and compact florescent light bulbs.

  1. Paper and cans you throw away in the subway get recycled. It’s sorted by hand in Jersey. My understanding is that they have considered switching to separate bins but the train-based collection system makes it difficult, contamination rates are high, and so it’s cheapest to keep sorting. I don’t think the same is true of street-corner litter bins, so throw away your paper before you leave the platform.

  2. i agree w/ #1. somewhat related, about a year or two ago i spotted what appeared to be a pilot recycling bin program on the jay street A/C/F platform. it was filled with trash in no time. however, it was a bit of a walk to the nearest trash can on the platform, and some people are too lazy or too much of a hurry to walk over to it. they should be side-by-side, in that instance.
