Closing Bell: Dock Street Swings Both Ways
The belgian blocks on Dock Street got spray painted yesterday with this lovely yellow double-line. We’re assuming (hoping) this is the kind of paint that washes off easily.

I work at 55 Washington and they were doing a film shoot down here yesterday on Dock street as well as Washington street – even added a hanging stoplight for a while. The signs said Walgreens so maybe its a commercial they were shooting.
Anyone who thinks a yellow stripe on a road leads to more safety needs to get a life. Or check out roads in other parts of the world.
“And God only knows how anybody bikes through DUMBO over these dear picturesque cobbles. I tried once–bone-shaking!”
And Brenda, if you had balls, I can assure you it would even be worse!
A couple blocks (no pun intended) away is another stone street, Washington, which also has a 1-block stretch that’s 2 way. It doesn’t have any street markings and I’ve never noticed any resulting traffic mayhem (notwithstanding Mr. B’s post the other day about an accident at the intersection).
If they’re going to leave the stone streets, then I say leave them as is, without markings. Otherwise just modernize with asphalt and markings and be done with it.
They are, however, great for prying up and throwing at the authorities during riots. Just sayin’.
And God only knows how anybody bikes through DUMBO over these dear picturesque cobbles. I tried once–bone-shaking! Not much better in a car, frankly. They are swell to look at, hideous to navigate at least in their current state of maintenance.
I LOVE the look of cobblestoned streets – but after working on a street with them for 2 years, the really aren’t practical to have in a big city
they are always uneven and disgusting stinky standing water puddles that often form for weeks and just fester. they’re difficult to drive a car/bike on (i’ve almost seen a few taxis lose control after going airborne bc they were driving too fast). They make snow removal more difficult. They make road repairs more difficult. They are treacherous to walk on when wet.
“there is nothing wrong with safety first esp if there was a real reason for doing this.”
Totally. I’m all for preservation of beautiful buildings etc but it seems a bit of a stretch to extend it to cobblestones.
I got bad news for you, Mr. B. That looks like the first part. Looks like they’ll be back with those big machines to make the white stripes white and bold.
