The Brooklyn Star reports that Councilwoman Gail Brewer’s recent introduction of legislation to ban cars from Central Park and Prospect Park no longer includes Olmsted’s Brooklyn gem. Brewer has decided the controversy surrounding the Prospect Park West bike lane “threw a wrench into any hopes of tackling another hot-button transportation issue” in Brooklyn.

  1. As someone posted on some other blog once…. The City’s politicians would be laughed at if the park had never allowed cars and they were currently proposing legislation to *introduce* automotive access.

Cars in the park (any park) should be considered *prima facie* ridiculous. A small access road to the skating rink and its adequate parking lot… OK. I don’t think that’s ever been considered to be a problem, just like the sunken “transverse” roads in Central Park.

But using the park roads as part of the traffic grid?! That crazy.

  2. Other than the fact that the change to PPW is a very POSITIVE thing and returning to an inappropriate (bad) design for the street is not a “trade” for relegated bicycles to the place of toys instead of a part of urban transportation.

Other than that, you guys are right on!
