Still undecided on how to celebrate the inauguration? Can’t make it to Dekalb Avenue? Make plans to go to The Bell House for the Brooklyn Inaugural Ball. The Ball, which benefits PS 261, will offer champagne and wine from Xia Xia wine bar and food from local restaurants (Madiba, Lunetta, Lobo, Chestnut, and Pacifico). There will be a rebroadcast of the inaugural ceremony and speech at 7:30 p.m. then followed by a live show with Karen Gibson Roc, South African Music Collective, and DJ Stone.
While I greatly question the idea of a $75 fund raiser ($150 if you bring someone, $200 if you include babysitting) for a public school, I have little trouble with the spelling. Yes, “Benefiting” is the preferred British spelling, both spelling are nearly universally accepted in the US. (Note the oxymoron of universally in the US.)
benefit
Noun
1. something that improves or promotes
2. advantage or sake: I’m doing this for your benefit
3. a payment made by an institution or government to a person who is ill, unemployed, etc.
4. a theatrical performance or sports event to raise money for a charity
Verb
[-fiting, -fited] or US [-fitting, -fitted]
to do or receive good; profit [Latin bene facere to do well]

Well, PS 261, let’s start by teaching your pupils how to spell. The word is “benefiting,” not “benefitting.”
