Streetlevel: Speakeasy Could Get Huge Patio

Clinton Hill restaurant The Speakeasy could get one of the largest patio cafes in Community Board 2, District Manager Rob Perris told us yesterday. He said the week voted last week to approve the bar and restaurant’s application for outdoor seating at 132 Greene Avenue with around 18 tables. That could be a pretty awesome thing for Clinton Hill, unless the food really is that “subpar,” then it’s only kinda awesome. According to their menu, the cheapest entree is a $10.50 burger, and the most expensive is a ribeye and loaded baked potato for $22. Most of the online reviews said the food wasn’t worth the price, but this multi-national restaurant has only been open for a few months. And there’s a bar and wide selection of appetizers, so cheers to that!

Food is decent but the menu is limmited and it is probably overpriced. that said, the bar is nice and its a nice spot for drinks appitizer and stuff like that.
My husband and I ate brunch at Speakeasy a few months ago and were both *very* disappointed with everything we ordered there. The coffee was horrible – I have gotten better coffee at a bodega. The orange juice was from a carton (not fresh). The food we ordered (eggs/hashbrowns/etc..) were ok.. we cook better breakfast at home. We haven’t been back yet and are hoping they have made changes since our last visit. We’ll give it another try – hopefully someone from the restaurant will read this review and make some changes.
the food sucks
WAY to expensive
The food is as good as the other mediocre restaurants in Ft Greene and Clinton Hill with the exception of Luz and Kush. The price point is the same as well.
I join with Bianca in saying that I have had not only delicious “comfort food” but great laid-back friendly service at Speakeasy. The music is great too. The whole vibe is perfect. It’s a neighborhood joint.
Bring on 18 tables!
I must dissent with the negative criticism of Speakeasy, I was there both for dinner at the very beginning and had excellent chicken and mashed potatoes to die for, and the miso salmon was good and well cooked.
Service was very friendly and the general “vibe’ was really nice. We went back for brunch the Sunday of the first Flea (with friends who came to peruse) and it was MOBBED and they had difficulties with service but brunch was good and they comped us with a second round of mimosas.
Incidentally, the above and something which happended last week ought to silence some of the negative comments about the Flea, since all the foot traffic seems to be having some positive effect on the neighborhood businesses, including minority owned ones: I was at a Fulton Street nail salon last Sunday when two girls came in from the Flea (we chatted while we were having our pedicure done) and asked for a place for brunch, and they where sent to Kush. How about that? On a related theme, what is happening with the Fulton Street BID? Hope they are not sitting on some public money… How many stores do they want to flee to Myrtle Avenue before they actually start DOING something?
there is something pleasantly menacing about the phrase, “the vegans would pay.”
I miss the bodega
sounds like a good idea but i think 9 tables would be the max it could fit.
