Locked in a frustrating stalemate with Thor Equities, the city is trying to make the best of a bad situation by putting together an interim plan to create a temporary amusements area on the land it owns in “Coney East.” The city is fully committed to making sure that Coney Island is open, Coney Island is active and Coney East is full of amusement, said Lynn Kelly, president of the Coney Island Development Corporation, referring to the area within the development zone slated for rides and attractions. The city’s makeshift park would total about six acres, more than doubling the existing five acres of amusement that are still left. The city is currently interviewing operators and hopes to be able to open for business by the summer of 2010. On a related note, The Brooklyn Paper reports that Ringling Brothers plans to set up in Coney Island this summer, though neither circus execs nor city officials would confirm.

Talk about missed opportunities- and a great loss to the city. What is it with these people who think they “Know” better than the rest of us what we need or want? I love Coney Island- or what it was. When do they start hiring the performers to wear the Mickey Mouse and Sleeping Beauty costumes, I wonder. The disneyfication of NYC continues. Ugh.
The destruction of Coney Island….
The What
Someday this war is gonna end…
About twenty years ago there was a plan for “Steeplechase Park,” which would have been a pay-one-admission amusement park, like at Great Adventure. It ended up not happening, just like everything else that’s been proposed out there.
This area has been studied and planned to death, with nothing to show for it.
rob…..you’re right about those newfangled playgrounds. Kids should learn to take their lumps at an early age or they become namby pambies, or worse… gay!!!! That’s what typically happens when democrats are in control. 🙂
i love love love the rides as they were on coney island. my only gripe is that they cost too much. oh yeah that and the fact that some of the carnies let some people on for free! what’s that about!? tho admittedly that’s even the case with lots of travelling carnivals that i went to as a kid. so maybe it’s not a big deal. i think it would be a lot better if it had a six flags style of payment where you pay one fee than ride all the rides you want. tho six flags fees were outta control, even for season passes. they are now bankrupt, no? i dont know how i feel about this little mini carnival the city proposes. you just know it’s going to be lame and just be a bunch of kiddy rides or rides that are seriously over regulated and dont feel like youre even on a ride. kinda like new playgrounds that are built with all the padding and styrofoam rubber and overly protective safety precautions. you just dont get the full feel of a real playground. scorching hot metal slides that when you hit the bottom you fall on a pile of gravel and skin you knees for the win!
