Brownstoner's Bonehead Move
Doh! Guess who found out the hard way this weekend that he forget to turn off the water line to his garden hose? Luckily your faithful blog host’s cellar survived unscathed. And, who knows, maybe the kids will be able to get some skating in before Spring!

We have a freeze-proof external hose fixture. Ours seems to work…just dont leave the hose in.
same thing happened to me this year (2nd time – I should know better).
If you have outside faucets that can be turned off from inside the house, you should shut them off there (inside) and then turn the faucet that’s outside on.
to David: I wouldn’t worry that your pipe froze. No water coming out was probably cause the water in that line sunk to the lowest part of your plumbing cause you hadn’t used the outdoor faucet in a while.
It was hard to remember this year, since it didn’t really freeze until late January. I turned mine off about two weeks ago and am a little concerned because when I opened a valve to drain water out of the rest of the outside line, nothing came. I’m a little afraid it froze (and burst an outside pipe) but no water came out because of the blockage. We’ll test it and see if the weather goes above freezing.
Must have been the weekend for this – my neighbor’s backyard pipe, which is not insulated, bursted and water poured into my backyard and basement. What bothers me is that people never seem apologetic — as if they are the only one inconvenience because they have to get the pipe fixed.
It froze and burst
i’m sorry, i’m confused as to what happened here, what happened with the water line?
Have you checked all your interior cold water pipes along the exterior wall?
Hate to see internal bursting when you turn the water back on…
We had fun this weekend as well…
The “developer up the block’s” masons accidentally left water on with our neighbor’s hose (who’s renting his water to them…) 2 weeks ago. 1 inch of ice…then thawed…now deep freeze over the weekend heaved his side entrance sidewalk up an inch and send major cracks to our mud room’s adjacent foundation wall (which is below grade)…
Slab will be replaced in the spring and our cracks patched and “re-dry locked” hopefully as well.
Or, I’ll have to sick the dawgs on him 😉
