Brooklyn parks don’t go quiet during the winter season, and for those looking to head outside as the year winds to a close there are lots of activities to enjoy.

We’ve rounded up a selection of free events that offer a chance to explore the borough’s flora and fauna.

It’s A Horse Of Course Hike and Greet
Prospect Park at Parkside Avenue and South Lake Drive
Saturday December 20 from 12 to 1 p.m.

Enjoy a hike through Brooklyn’s backyard with the horses of the Parks Enforcement Patrol Mounted Unit. Learn more about the unit’s work in the park on a guided tour with the Urban Park Rangers.

Birding: Winter Waterfowl – Solstice Edition
Bush Terminal Park at 43rd Street and 1st Avenue
Sunday December 21, from 10 to 11 a.m.

You can get some tips on the best vantage points for viewing the winter birds that make an appearance in Bush Terminal Park during this event with the Urban Park Rangers. Birders from novice to experienced are welcome at the event.

Art Under the Bridge: Stippling Seeds
Brooklyn Bridge Park at 334 Furman Street
Sunday December 21, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

As part of the Art Under the Bridge series, Brooklyn Bridge Park is hosting a workshop on a technique, stippling, used by botanical illustrators for centuries. The indoor workshop is suggested for adults and teens with some drawing experience. The event is first come, first served.

Festival of Lights: Winter Solstice
Marine Park at Seba Playground
Sunday December 21 from 5 to 6 p.m.

Bundle up to celebrate the winter solstice in Marine Park. If you bring binoculars or a telescope, you might have a chance of viewing the Geminid and Ursid meteor showers.

Winter Solstice Campfire and Storytelling
Marine Park at the Salt Marsh Nature Center
Sunday December 21 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

If you want to guarantee some warmth for your solstice celebration, you can join the Urban Park Rangers for story telling and a campfire.

McGolrick Bird Club
Monsignor McGolrick Park at Russell Street and Driggs Avenue
Saturday December 27 from 9 to 11 a.m.

See what birds are flitting around Greenpoint with a morning walking through McGolrick Park. The free walks are held year round.

Nature Meditation Walk
Calvert Vaux Park at Shore Parkway and Rabbi Block Street
Saturday December 27 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.

Unwind before the start of a new year with a mindful walk through Calvert Vaux Park with the Urban Park Rangers.
