Mayor Bloomberg basically told the State yesterday to s#!+ or get off the pot when it comes to control of Brooklyn Bridge Park. “If they are not willing to turn it over to us, we’ll turn it over to them,” the mayor said. “But then we’re not going to put city money in, obviously.” Bloomberg did temper his tough talk with some softer language, reported The Daily News: “I was somewhat encouraged, actually, by the report I’ve gotten,” he added. “There’s a lot of dialogue going back and forth. And if you’re talking, then there’s a good chance of you coming up with a solution.” We shall see.

  1. The City has the money already allocated to the Convention Center on the West Side. The city proposed taking the Brooklyn Bridge Park and one other project from the Joint custody of the state and giving the responsibility to the State on the Convention center. The 210 million or so the city has allocated to the Convention center would revert to the City which can reallocate it to the Brooklyn Bridge Park….half of the 210 is what the BBP needs for the current plan. Senator Squadron has said he won’t oppose it, if the demands he wants are met(added year around activities[which would add to the park some cost figure at least another 50 million dollars more or less – an off the cuff calculation] limited additional development and additional maintenance money for the park from outside the Park foot print.)

  2. No more Manhattan folks for mayor.

    Manhattan is the seat of all money, power, and influence. All power emanates from there and spreads out to the farthest reaches of its dominions. We are but vassals in the Manhattan Empire; Frankish barbarians before the great Ceasar. Such is life.

  3. Sam;

    Agreed. In fact, I’ll take it a step further. I’d like the city to take control of all the major development projects: Ground Zero, Javits center, etc. Our state government is just the pits. Albany is a cesspool of corruption and incompetence, and I see no one on the horizon to clean it up. Actually, Rudy may be good for the job. You’d need a pitbull to go against Albany.

  4. dibs, I had the same thought. Bloomie may pay for it anonymously through one of his philanthropies. The maintenance cost is still an issue there. A park on piers is going to be costly to maintain. Without the condos going up to pay the PILOT fees, the park’s maintenance is unfunded. Bloomie will figure it out. Where there is a will there’s a way. Where there’s a brain there’s a way. That’s why the anacephalics in Albany are helpless.

  5. OK, now we’re talking. If Bloomie wrestles control of the project from the cold lifeless hand of the State bureacracy, something will finally be built there. The State government is like a comatose bear. It eats and farts but is incapable of doing anything. Bloomie will kick ass, a park will appear there in the blink of an eye. The only hope for this project is to get it away from Albany control. For the first time EVER, I actually see a glimmer of hope for the Brooklyn Bridge waterfront.
