This may rank as the least exciting retail transaction of the year from a consumer perspective, but at least it’ll help keep the Belltel sponsors out of the red. As the Brooklyn Eagle reported earlier this week, the General Services Administration has leased 12,000 square feet of ground-floor space at 365 Bridge Street where they plan to create a daycare center for children of Federal employees in the Downtown Brooklyn area; the ten-year deal leaves just a couple thousand square feet on the ground floor unspoken for. What makes this such an important deal is that it reflects a shift in thinking by landlords in the downtown area who had hoped for high-end retailer tenants, but haven’t been successful due to the economic climate, said Robert F. Hebron IV, a broker with Ingram & Hebron Realty that represented the landlords. The ones who are responding to this and thinking differently are getting the tenants.

  1. Why would this daycare be limited to federal employees? Stupid. Downtown is or rather is becoming residential. People don’t just work here, we live here. I’m still looking for daycare for my son and its sucks because the options are limited.

  2. I am a federal employee who works in downtown brooklyn, and I would be interested in this, since I have a child in day care nearby, but (a) the Brooklyn Eagle story said the center wouldn’t be opening until spring 2011, (b) it will only accomodate 76 children, and (c) they’re not saying how much it will cost or whether it will be subsidized. Also, Belltel is a solid 20-25 minute walk from my office. That said, it’s about time they started providing some child care options for federal employees in this area.

  3. I would imagine this is very exciting for all the district court employees in the area who are in need of daycare.

But those civil service types maybe aren’t who this website is addressed to.

  4. I think the Montessori Day School of Brooklyn had hoped to lease some space in this building 4 years ago, but had to pull out because of embezzlement by their office manager (who is now in Federal prison).
