The one time we tried to go to 5 Front we walked out after seeing the interior–it felt as if it could be in any city in the Midwest. No soul. The storefront is getting a fresh lease on life though. As DumboNYC pointed out earlier this week, a new spot called Brooklyn Bridge Gardens is under construction, and a sign on the door promises and opening as soon as next week. With Pier 1 now open to the public, this could work out very well for the owners if it’s nicely done. In fact, given the number of tourists passing by, it could do well even if it’s not that nicely done. That’s a good position to be in! GMAP

  1. I haven’t been to Five Front in a while – the friends who were regulars there moved – but I had some great meals there. Sorry to see it go – a tourist-trap beer-garden isn’t what that area needs.

Also, seriously, anyone who’d judge a restaurant by its decor knows nothing about eating in New York.

  2. The Underground is now a Petco

Max’s Kansas City is now Green Cafe

    Area is now condos

Danceteria is now a Alma Lofts luxury apartments

The Limelight is now a lame ass yuppie mini-mall

    *rob*

  3. the food was pretty good but the service – deporable. seriously. we had brunch there about a month ago & saw two different tables walk out because they had been waiting 20 min+ to order. I really hope this change is for the better.

  4. You should have stayed. The food was very good but the staff turnover was troubling. And then they stopped takign credit cards. The place has a nice garden and lcoal art on the walls (not that I liked it but…) and attracted the theater crowd as well as the neighborhood.

It lacked the manufacured “soul” of other places (many of which probably picked up the decor from MW flea markets) but it is missed. Now it will be a tourist hangout.
