When Key Food on Third Avenue and 94th Street closed in June, Bay Ridgers lamented the lack of good produce in the hood. But lament turned to joy in October, when a green market opened, and area arugula-eaters could get their fill. Well, hold the joy after all. “Three days before the market opened, an article in The Brooklyn Paper said that come January, the farmers and beekeepers would have to clear out or shut down to make way for a Walgreens drugstore,” writes the NY Times. “Michael Hurwitz, director of the city’s Greenmarket program, is hoping to persuade Walgreens to let the farmers stick around. At the same time, a number of local residents have rallied to save the market.” David Marangio, a real estate agent, is searching for an alternative space for the farmers. He also happens to be one of the organizers of the Bay Ridge Food Co-op. That endeavor, too, is looking for space.

you know, i feel like telling her she needs a bigger store and more workers now. She seems to be very busy and popular now but not changing to meet the demands of her business. i hope this doesn’t lead to her loosing business because I really find her cakes to be the tastiest in the nabe. plus all of her ingredients are preservative free.
Italina…off topic.
I stopped by Ivy Bakery on Saturday morning at 11:00am. They didn’t have anything out yet. They told me, they just opened and to come back in an hour. I didn’t make it back. I was disappointed I couldn’t get anything. I usually start my sugar intake at about 10:00am.
I’ll try again, next weekend. The menu looks good…black forest cake!!!
i sencond that notion, BRG. i’m hoping they find another location or that Walgreens does some good will and let the green market use the parking lot on Saturdays. its good business because tell me when will Walgreens have up to 50 people in their parking lot at any given time on a saturday? i have to say i never had any intentions of shopping at that walgreens as it is not close to my house but since i to the green market EVERY saturday i would be more apt to shop for my pharmacy needs, etc.
Ok, I’ll be the first one to post because of my namesake.
I live a couple of blocks from this site. The supermarket was heavily used. I’m not a supermarket shopper (I don’t buy prepacked things), but was disappointed when it closed. Just for the fact, that people now have to travel further and there is no other supermarket or grocery store this far up (past 91st street).
I love the green market and have been shopping there almost every weekend. I hope they find another site for it. Otherwise, I’m going to have to go back to carrying apples all the way from Park Slope.
