Finally, Red Hook residents have received the traffic light they’ve been waiting for. The new traffic signal is located on the corner of Van Brunt and Sullivan Streets. It protects pedestrians from Fairway traffic on this busy intersection near a bus stop and a school. According to NY1 local motorists are happy about the light and so are pedestrians and they wouldn’t mind a few more. “I think they really need some more traffic lights on Van Brunt, said Red Hook resident Jackie Thornton. The Department of Transportation doesn’t plan on installing any more traffic lights for now, but will conduct another traffic study if they are asked to do so.

I’m not talking about ticketing for a U-turn. These cops are traffic control agents who stand in the street and direct traffic. I’m saying they instruct people to make u-turns, which is fine by me if the agent is holding other traffic, but when an agent lets a truck make a u-turn on a street that is not for trucks – this just shows gross ineptitude. Oh by the way they don’t even stand in the street, they are on the corner – so no one can see them while they are talking on their headphone cell.
Good luck living on Atlantic, that street is loud and dangerous, but it has great food and bars.

The NYPD hand out a ticket for an illegal U-turn? WHEN was the last time that happened? I’ve lived on Atlantic for more than six years, and have yet to see one. Ever. And they happen all day long, seven days a week in front of my place.
Did Albany change the laws about U-turns, or has the NYPD forsaken all semblance of traffic enforcement? This local precinct is laughable.
Yeah, I biked passed that. What a pain in the ass!
Now if the City could only stop the big trucks from turning off Van Brunt onto Hamilton/Summit Street where they inevitably get stuck making the turn on Columbia Street. On Sunday it was backed up by a truck and several cars decided to go around via the sidewalk! Real safe in a residential neighborhood.
Most of the traffic control agents just stand on the corner during the week and do nothing; they let trucks go the wrong way, make u-turns and whatever – they don’t care. It is a shame and a mess. If only a cruise ship would dock on Columbia Street then the city would take notice or unfortunately, someone getting run over.
