Is the age of the Brooklyn house tour over? Read on for why one reader hopes that’s not the case.

Comment of the Day

I’ve been involved in organizing a couple of house tours. The biggest impediment is the difficulty in persuading homeowners to volunteer their homes. As people spend multi millions for these houses, their desire to open them up to all comers shrinks exponentially. It used to be a relatively easy decision and a nice way to support the local civic groups (and their beneficiaries). Now just as the home owners are feeling the need for more privacy, the public is feeling the need to be more intrusive. It’s too bad because the spirit of mutual appreciation for brownstone architecture and neighborhoods was a lovely thing to participate in.
