When I attended the meetings of the old Brooklyn Brownstone Conference on behalf of my neighborhood association in the ’70s and ’80s Ruby Ford, who represented [IIRC] Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant insisted that she represented the NEIGHBORHOODS [plural] of Bedford and Stuyvesant Heights and that the “Bedford Stuyvesant” name had been made up by the Daily News to represent any predominantly African-American central Brooklyn neighborhood where a crime was reported.
