Remember the tip we got yesterday about a big fire on 9th Street? Turns out it was indeed a real fire (and not part of the movie getting filmed on the corner) and quite a devastating one at that: Grace Cleaners, and from the looks of it, all the apartments above it at 511 9th Street were completely gutted, reports the blog In My Back Yard. We’ve yet to hear what started the fire. Anyone know? GMAP

It’s terrible. I really like the family; nice people. They had a good business — and honestly they were the best deal around.
I read somewhere that fire officials believe it was a faulty boiler.
The family that ran Grace was a lovely family.
I particularly enjoyed greeting the man on the modified Vespa who did deliveries for them.
I hope they can rebuild.
I guess it’s petty to worry about my five shirts.
I feel so bad for my friends at Grace Cleaners; I hope they had insurance

There was also a fire in a cleaners on Montague Street.
This fire looks similar to the one that last month damaged and closed down the cleaners next to the Pioneer on Lafayette across from Choice. They have reopened this week. Wondering if there is some issue with dust fires in their exhausts? I suppose same threat exists to grease exhausts from restaurants.
