You might have noticed that Fulton Street in Bed Stuy and Clinton Hill has been one giant construction site for the past few weeks. The reason? We can only guess it has something to with the Transportation Safety Act that resulted in a$4.48 allocation to repair Fulton Street from Clinton Avenue to Bedford Avenue as well as “upgrade the streetscape for pedestrian use.” The goal, presumbly, is to create a more shopper-friendly experience. Bring it on, we say.
I live on Fulton, and if there are any improvements planned, they won’t be here for a while, and that isn’t what this is. I talked to some of the Keyspan guys about this a few months ago. The city is going to redo the water lines under Fulton next year. Keyspan is rerouting the gas, then the city comes in to do the water, then Keyspan comes back to restore the gas. This is going to take YEARS. The Keyspan guy told me “I hope you don’t think this is bad, because we’re ballerinas compared to the city guys.”
He could be wrong, but I’ll take his word for it until I see something more authoritative.
ANYWAY, anyone REALLY know what was going on? Because there are certainly no improvements that my eyes can see. I’m sure it was just gas line maintenance.
I agree, Jacob. The area didn’t get the attention it deserved in the past, because people didn’t demand it. Black or white, rich or poor, it’s only when people get off their asses and take action that things get done.
But I’m sure the racial demagogues will dismiss this somehow. They always do.
Area get increased services and just get better in general when a critical mass of people decide that they WANT to live there and invest themselves into making the area better for the long haul. Just look at the South Bronx and the Eastern half of Washington Heights. There’s no influx of rich white people, but community organizations sprout up and demand services. Children who grew up in the areas and went to college are moving back to the neighborhood and bringing money with them. Check out the pull commanded by Sustainable South Bronx if you don’t beleive me. This doesn’t happen in a lot of neighborhoods and change takes an outside force to occur. Also, I’m not speaking of individual commitment, but rather a mass community commitment to itself, which is a beautiful and sadly rare achievment in many neighborhoods, rich and poor. How many bland middle and upper middle class neighborhoods are there? A LOT.

heh anon 7:28 it is clinton AVENUE not clinton street, clinton street is in brooklyn heights and we all know about how “beautiful and white” that neighborhood is. get your streets and avenues correct.
I’m surprised it went past Clinton Street, myself. Has to be Keyspan putting in gas heat for the new expensive condos going up along Bedford.
Don’t get ahead of yourself Keyspan. Look at the hookers returning to Hell’s Kitchen.
Here’s to keeping New York real.
where and whom can we ask of what are they really going to do as far as improvement?
you got that right the last 2 anons!!! as well as the new redesigned playground at Classon & Fulton! i’m very happy about it but what TOOK “the powers that be” so long???
i too thought it had something to do with Keyspan. and i honestly will not believe that anything will be improved significantly, until the whole job is done and i see it for my own eyes. yeah a few squares of the sidewalk are better right now, but we need way more varied improvements.
