We received this photo of the recently completed renovation at 293 Pacific Street from a reader along with the comment, “Hard to argue against landmarking when this is the outcome.” Took the words right out of our mouth. GMAP

  1. Sorry DIBS, I didn’t know dictionary definitions were “elitist.” If it isn’t tripartite it’s just a round-top window, in spite of what the vinyl replacement window manufacturers call it.

  3. DiBS; Palladium is a rare, whitish metal. Palladian is the window style with a rounded-top center and shorter, flanking side windows. Neither term fits this window; it’s just an anemic-looking, pseudo-colonial, arch-top window.

  4. The “before” version may have been boarded-up, but it still had the classic lines and proportions of a Victorian flat-front row-house. The re-muddled version is a clash of non-complimentary styles and poor aesthetic choices. The original brownstone lintels are gone, replaced by crudely installed brickwork (couldn’t they even have salvaged matching brick for that?) Considering that this is a south-facing facade, Still, I’m pretty sure they’ll realize a mistake was made on that first summer day when the sunshine through those picture windows heats those rooms to 120 degrees.

  6. I, too, need to hear the words that were taken out of mouths.

This building actually seems like an argument against landmarking. Compared to the other crap that gets built in non-landmarked zones, this is beautiful.
