From the Forum: Which Window Material Is Better, Vinyl or Aluminum?

A Brownstoner reader needs to have their windows replaced, and wants to know whether to go with vinyl or aluminum.

We are new home owners and just realized four of our windows are in such disrepair that they would have to replaced. What’s confusing are window material to use, vinyl or aluminum. We have read about vinyl being eco friendly but not sure about how long they will last as opposed to aluminum. Anyone have vinyl windows for 10-15 years and what problems have they been through?
