Thanks denton, THL and DIBS for the responses. I’ve always been intrigued by animal psychology, particularly the work of Pavlov. It’s interesting that I’ve known of various children and even adults who’ve accidentally burned themselves on hot stoves, yet it seems the cats are able to avoid this. Makes you wonder who the smart ones are!
That’s the same range my Thanksgiving turkey was cooked in. The cook/host told me his only complaint was that one oven was too big and the other was too small.
But you can’t please everybody, right?
Our cats in Philly love to sit on the heat registers. We had a 19 year old Burmese who died last year who would sit so close to the fireplace that you didn’t want to hold him he would get so hot. You could burn your hand on the tag that hung from his collar!!!

It looks like your cat made sure every surface and drawer were installed to his specifications. My favorite pic was kitch-23, just love that “caught” expression on his face. He’s gorgeous.
Oh yeah, and the kitchen is pretty darn snazzy too! What a great job you’re doing. Keep those photo’s coming!
Biff- My husband actually found our girl cat as a newborn under the radiator in the lobby of his old building in Queens. He was getting his mail, saw her move and he lifted his boot up to stomp on her because he thought she was a rat (nice building right?). Thank god she mewed because now, she no longer fits under a radiator but soon as you hear the gentle hiss of steam coming up in my house you can see her jump up on top of the nearest radiator cover and settle in for a nice piping hot nap.
I’m sorry, but is that kitchen in a private home, or in an institution?
But seriously. I’ll bet you’ve got five kids and parents living with you that will get breakfast and supper every day.

bc, this cat used to be all white and fluffy. Then it got friendly with my new stove, and before you know it, he got all toasty and brown and caramelized!
Seriously, cats, like all animals, are creatures of instinct. They won’t usually burn themselves. But they gravitate towards warmth.
This is an Abyssinian, the king of cats, and this one comes from a line of show cats. They are aggressive hunters and explorers, altho they are affectionate as well, when they are not breaking things. My wife works with a woman who raises them to show. This particular specimen was sold to a woman for $600, who couldn’t handle him, so he was returned, with no refund.
We wouldn’t pay a dime for an animal, as there are plenty of rescues around, but the woman my wife works with was already paid, so she wasn’t looking to get paid again. So here we are. He kills anything that moves that is smaller than him, so he’s perfect for a house under renovation.
denton, serious question (I’ve never lived with a cat). The cat get used to romping around and sleeping on the stove. How does s/he know to stay away from it when it’s recently been used? Is it once bitten (burned), twice shy?
Very happy you got to cook there (seriously.)
btw, did you get to use all six burners 😉 ?
