From the Forum: What Is the Source of the Mysterious Smell in the Basement?

A smell of paint thinner has suddenly invaded a homeowner’s basement and they can’t figure out the origin. Nothing has been spilled recently and the smell emerged in the afternoon. The homeowner remembers this happening once last year as well. What could be the source?
