Happy May Day! In celebration of the traditional day of springtime festivities we take a look at past May Day celebrations in Prospect Park. The events, whether in 1919 or 1971, included a maypole as a central focus — bedecked in streamers, with children joyously dancing round.

Children dressed in the traditional white outfits of May Day circle round maypoles in 1919.

The simple white dresses had disappeared by 1971, but the crowds still gathered to watch the dancing.
