fence
In addition to checking out the cool fence at our friends’ place in Crown Heights, we were struck by this fireplace at the rear of their parlor floor. We hadn’t seen this particular style before. Are they common in this part of town or representative of any particular style or era?

  1. very unusual- it’s just a little strange looking to me- the big massive base- almost like it should be in an old stone castle, and then the delicate trim and scalloping at the top. Still- would not kick it out of bed. I love it.

  2. I love this fireplace! It looks very pseudo Norman to me. It would look tons better stripped. I bet it’s beautiful tiger oak under there. Most of the more massive surrounds I’ve seen, especially in Crown Heights, all seem to be oak. I guess that was the prevailing style for late 1880’s though around 1910 ish.

Are they planning to strip it at some point?

  3. I live in Crown Heights and have three of these type fireplaces in my house. I figured the tile was a later addition but looks like it’s original if it shows up in other homes.
