When we read The Times story on Sunday of the junkyard-inspired design for 46 Putnam Avenue, we decided to check it out for ourselves. “It’s a context I’m not used to,” said architect David Ling, whom The Times had asked to design a makeover for the three story brick building, “but it’s exciting, especially the car wreck. It’s like a Chamberlain sculpture.” The result is kinda cool: a curtain wall of glass on the front and a Serra-esque sheet of metal enveloping the side of the building. At a projected cost of $950,000 to $1.5 million (the building itself is listed for $1.14 million), it seems unlikely that this will ever get built.

  1. Does anyone know what the story is with the junkyard on all sides of this building? who owns it? what goes on there? And why hasn’t the sanitation department gotten involved and removed all the junk? It is an eyesore for the neighborhood!

  2. That proposal with the metal walls sure was silly. But the price per foot sounds pretty good for that big a building. Being a corner building it must get a lot of sun. Somebody should fix it up in some fashion. At least there are trees around it now…..

  3. As a neighbor, I am not sure how I feel about a moat! This article seems to take flight of fancy over the top. The other editions of this column seemed to be a little more realistic. Seems to me that the architect really didn’t spend anytime working on this and threw together this joke at the last minute. The whole article is a gift to the realtor who is trying to sell a badly renovated student-slum as a high end property. I toured the building a couple of weeks ago, and the lay-out is horrible with the maximum number of bedrooms shoe-horned in. The spiral stairs to the “grotto” are badly welded flimsy steps (okay I am a big guy, but even so). Kind of a shame because prior to the reno it had a classic store front with corinthian columns and an inset store front.
