Kevin over at Forgotten NY has been indulging his fascination with the “human faces, monstrous images, or combinations of both” that provide sculptural ornamentation on the sides of buildings around the city. This particular one is on Cumberland Street in Fort Greene, not too far from Brownstoner HQ. These fellows don’t look happy, do they?

  1. Wasn’t it to scare away spirits or something? (much like a jack-o-lantern) also part of the tradition stems from the practice putting the heads of your conquered enemies on display…going back to either the romans or celts, forget which.
