Imagine sauntering up a substantial stoop and into one of the seven Romanesque Revival rowhouses at 1187-1199 Bergen Street. The rough-faced limestone stretch was designed circa 1894 by architect Albert E. White for developer John A. Bliss, who were both very active in this section of North Crown Heights.

White repeated design elements across the row and incorporated a continuous red tile roof, pierced with gables, to unify the development. These houses, and others designed by White, are included within Phase 1 of the Crown Heights North Historic District.
