The BOTD is a no-frills look at interesting structures of all types and from all neighborhoods. There will be old, new, important, forgotten, public, private, good and bad. Whatever strikes our fancy. We hope you enjoy.

Address: 548 Lincoln Place, between Classon and Franklin
Name: Private House
Neighborhood: Crown Heights North/Crow Hill
Year Built: Unknown
Architectural Style: Romanesque Revival
Architects: Unknown
Landmarked: No

Why chosen: It’s not fancy, it wasn’t built by anyone famous, it’s not on an impressive block, it’s not even big. It’s a nice middle class home, a survivor of the growth of the city, once part of a row, now alone, sandwiched between two apartment buildings. As much as I love the fancy homes of the wealthy, and the work of the architects who built them, I have a soft spot for these houses, and feature them in any neighborhood I find then, because this is where just plain folks aspired to live and raise their families. This house has wonderful symmetry, the arched windows and door are quite pleasing to the eye, especially that impressive wrought iron and glass front door. The new white paint job is also nice, making the house very elegant. The Property Shark photo from 2006 shows peeling paint on the cornice, with a dull red paint facade and tan trim. This is so much better, contrasting well with the surrounding buildings and standing tall on its own. Well done!

  1. I agree!
This is a sweet house. Sometimes painting a house makes sense although it breaks all the “rules”.
Painted white, this red and brown house looks like a little vanilla cupcake.
