Park Slope Brooklyn -- 21 7th Avenue History

The BOTD is a no-frills look at interesting structures of all types and from all neighborhoods. There will be old, new, important, forgotten, public, private, good and bad. Whatever strikes our fancy. We hope you enjoy.

Address: 21 7th Avenue at Sterling Place
Name: Former Lillian Ward House
Neighborhood: Park Slope
Year Built: 1887
Architectural Style: Queen Anne/Romanesque Revival
Architect: Lawrence P. Valk

The French oriel tower is the icing on the cake for this fabulous house, which is the corner anchor for the other three adjoining houses in this group on 7th Avenue, all in amazing shape.

The way light shines through the stained and curved glass must be amazing for the occupants of the tower. There is much to see in addition, including the entryway on Sterling Place and a large parlor floor bay.

Lillian Ward was a famous singer during the latter part of the 19th century.

  1. that whole tragedy was so awful. Only one little boy survived the crash. He died about 48 hours later at Methodist Hospital. They really couldn’t do much for badly injured people then. The RC church on Sterling Place that was utterly destroyed was named “Pillar of Fire”. Weird huh?

  2. I never thought of it before, but I wonder what the houses looked like that were taken out by the airplane crash. Anyone know? MM I think you should get on it.

BTW my barber, Angelo, says he was cutting hair when it happened and went and had a look.

  3. Someone said Lillian Ward still resides there and gives occasional recitals.

I think she’s now almost 200 years old, but I hear she’s still in good voice, and quite a charmer, too.

    I don’t know if it’s true, though.

  4. Montrose, I think it’s Lawrence B. Valk (B. not P.).

Here in Park Slope, Valk also designed the 6th Avenue Baptist Church, at Lincoln Place within the Historic District, and St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 6th Ave. at 2nd Street, not currently designated.

  5. This is a really great house. It’s a two family and office.

I live across the street. The office seems active but there’s not a lot going on in the rest of the house at night. Last summer I met and gave some ivy to a woman who said she was the housekeeper and one evening a couple of years ago a crowd flooded out the front door one night.
