I agree this is a rather unattractive effort.
Anyone know anything about the condo complex on North 11th and Roebling? They took their for sale banners down on the buidling and it is no longer listed on the Developers Group site.
I don’t know- I find this building a lot less offensive than the big ones being put up using the leftover materials and the obviously drunk architect (If there even is one). And if I am not mistaken, those are not Hasidic developers.
Why put all the blame on the developers? It is as much the responsibility of the people who spend money on these types of places to stop doing it. As long as there is money to be made, buildings like this will keep going up.
These are not Hasidic developments, but they are Hasidic developers. They are not, for the most part, meant to be rented or sold to members of the Hasidic community, but to “outsiders.” I believe this building was built by the same people who did the buildings on Spencer St that are having such problems because the developers lied and said the buildings were to be used as student/faculty housing for an area yeshiva and then sold them as market rate condos. Additionally, the number of code violations (and safety hazards) on these properties is amazing and will take a lot of work to fix. I pity the poor buyers here — another reason not to go with a Developers Group sale property.
Lovely explanation. However, (a) it is not a good excuse for an ugly building, (b)brownstoner did not refer to the ethnic or religious make-up of the intended occupants or the developers in introducing his critique, and (c) calling the series “bedford bums” is pretty charitable.
I believe the Hasidic community is putting up these buildings as big, cheaply, and quickly as possibly because their community is expanding in size so quickly. They desperately need housing that is within their community and close to their synagogues. Quick, cheap construction is a necessity under these circumstances.
I think that calling these buildings “Bedford Bums” is insensitive to needs of the Hasidic community.

I dunno Babs. This one may not be for Hasidim but others sure look like they are with all that ironwork covering all windows.

There is nothing wrong with a buildings that serves a function. that might look cheap and is quickly built!
