Across the street from the ugly newish townhouse condos on Poplar that we looked at last week are some architecturally and historically significant buildings. In the middle of the block at Number 72 sits the old police building that appears to no longer be in use; it would be interesting to hear about its past. Flanking the police station are two old woodframe houses at 64 and 80 Poplar. Number 64, on the right, has been owned by the same guy for at least the last thirty years; Number 80’s title history is a little messier so it’s hard to tell what’s been going on. GMAP
I know an owener in #80. It is a co-op now with a back building. I think mayube 4 or 5 owners in full. very nice people.
11:22 here. Yes, condos for sure. My “I think” was that it was still being developed by the original purchaser — as of a few months ago that was true and I assume it still is, but I haven’t seen any update on it since December.
The police building housed the unit that handled internal investigations. In other words, they were policing the police department.
The police building is definitely going to be condos…
I was just going to relate that same story about the police building — what kind of a jerk doesn’t check out landmarks restrictions before bidding on a property? He must have thought he was getting the deal of the century…not! But condos in the building could be really cool; I agree, it’s been unused far too long (since I lived in the Heights in the 1980’s).
The old police station was long vacant and the neighbor associations urged the city to sell it off. They did finally at a city auction, but the moron who bought it didn’t realize it was in a landmark area and couldn’t build up. So that guy tried to unload and couldn’t get his price. Now (I think) he’s trying to condo-ize it within the Landmark restrictions. We’re hopeful that will happen quickly. It’s been empty for far too long.
