midland-video-0109.jpgThere may be more and more artists in Sunset Park, but there are also quite a few adult video stores, a fact that has residents increasingly up in arms. In fact, the melting-pot neighborhood has as many as 25 porn shops and peep shows, reports The Daily News. “Our community has been dumped on,” said Community Board 7 Chairman Randolph Peers. “Mothers can’t bring their children to school without exposing them to things they shouldn’t see,” said Gloria Hidalgo, 70, one of 200 Sunset Park residents who signed a petition calling for the shops to be closed. The shop owners say there’s no cause for concern. Here’s the money-shot quote from Gamage Prabath, an employee at Midland Video at 4106 Third Avenue: “They arrive at their sexual satisfaction here, so therefore the children and the ladies on the street are safe.” At least he’s not beating around the bush. And if they need an alternate local to “arrive at their sexual satisfaction,” well, there’s always a McSam hotel!

  1. Those shops really are over by 3rd Ave, where there is not a single reason for 99% of the neighborhood population to go. The sidestreets above 4th Ave all the way to 8th Ave are, for the most part, nice, from the 40’s up to the mid-60’s. The avenues are bustling with legitimate businesses. Sunset Park is a very authentic NYC brownstone neighborhood, and very well priced. Obviously, I live there. I do feel bad for the 1% who live over around 3rd, though, mostly because it’s ugly and filled with fumes.

  2. “This would not have happened under Giuliani’s watch.”

That’s hysterical. These places were here before G, and are here after him. THere were zoning regs passed, about churches, schools, etc.

Besides G was probably a customer. After all he was boffing a couple of different chicks while he was married, remember?

  3. DannyBKNY- I totally remember Foxy Den when I was growing up in Sunset Park! There was another one called Sweet Cherry on 42nd that I used to pass by on the way to church (sooo not kidding). I totally get why people in the area are upset by it. As industrial as it may be, there are plenty of residences nearby. This seems to have become big business in Sunset Park for the few years, which is really too bad.

  4. It is a shame that families have to be exposed to this smut in their neighborhoods. They have a right to raise their children in a non-threatening environment. NYC better wake up! This would not have happened under Giuliani’s watch.
