So back to the issue:
The whole idea of having families put down their top 12 (who has a top 12?) is what has created a mass of people who attend (or don’t attend) school far from home. It used to be that only people willing and able to travel 90 minutes to school would choose to apply to or put down schools far away. Now, it truly is a lottery.
After school activities have become even more dismal than they ever were. I can’t count the number of times a parent has told me their child must come straight home because it’s past dark when they arrive back from school. (Difficult to imagine now – close to the summer solstice.) I can’t offer my students a ride home because of liability, and they can’t afford a car service. So arriving home from play rehearsal, test review, or sports becomes a dilemma.
