A blogger for an Ohio-based education foundation, the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, decided he wanted to figure out which neighborhoods in the United States experienced the most gentrification over the first decade of the 21st century. The reason: “Gentrification—for all of its downsides—is providing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to integrate some of our schools—at least if we don’t let it go to waste.” So using the change in share of the white population by zip code as per census figures, the blogger created his rankings and guess what? Brooklyn took two of the top ten spots. As you can tell from the map on the jump (interactive version here), the affected neighborhoods include the northern sections of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill and the northwestern corner of Bed Stuy (11205) as well as the northeastern part of Bed Stuy and the southeastern portion of Williamsburg. Interesting but not terribly surprising.
