Teen Rehab Center Slated for Boerum Hill

Tonight Community Board 2′s executive committee will vote on an application by a rehab center called Redemption Point to operate a facility at 540 Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill. The application, to the state’s Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services, has already been approved by the board’s health committee. The Local reported on Redemption Point’s plans a couple weeks ago, saying the center is aimed at helping teens. It’s being run by Alfred Saunders, who grew up in the Gowanus Houses and served a prison sentence because of his own involvement with drugs; Saunders said opening the center will be a way for him to give back to the community. Every time I see a social services program open in a former factory building, I can’t help but wonder… if the jobs that used to be in that building were available today to these same troubled clients, would we need so many social service programs?
