The blog I Love Franklin Avenue reports on two recent incidents in which police said it was illegal for tenants to be hanging out on the roofs of their Crown Heights apartment buildings. In one case, cops told a resident that it was illegal to be on the roof and that the building is part of the “F-TAP program, where landlords give police permission to do vertical patrols and arrest trespassers.” The tenant told the officers that, in fact, the building wasn’t part of F-Tap, and the officers backed down, saying they were just trying to keep the area safe. In the second incident, cops interrupted a dinner party on a roof and told the group of people that they were trespassing and violating open container laws. The resident of the building says the landlord has allowed rooftop use for years, but the officers ended up issuing court summonses for everyone present. Have cops been policing rooftops in the neighborhood regularly lately?
