mccarren-park-ceremony-120709.jpgA ground-breaking ceremony was held yesterday at McCarren Park and Curbed was there for the play-by-play, which included the requisite tossing of dirt. Despite a few references to McLaren Park, Mayor Bloomberg mustered lots of energy and enthusiasm for the $50 million project—which includes a new pool (which will morph into a skating rink in the winter) and a year-round indoor gym. You can check out the new schematic in addition to a bunch of other photo-op shots on the link.

  1. oh lord. it’s great! there are actually real people with families who live around here. we are swimming! thanks bloomie!! this is a fantastic project. thought the lovers of old would be happy to see this place restored. it’s very cool.

  2. Rob, you cut me off at your last few words! I was thinking precisely the same thing: the previous incarnation as a giant pee-filled babysitting vat for drunk, stoned and/or idiotically behaved hipsters…

I think this pool looks beautiful! Can’t comprehend opposition to it. It’s like our own Roman baths.
