The longtime Spanish restaurant El Encuentro at 535 6th Avenue and 14th Street will become a Mediterranean restaurant. This despite investing in a shiny new awning recently. Last week, we reported that a new bar and grill was opening two blocks down across the street. Is 6th Avenue becoming another restaurant row? GMAP

  1. I’m hoping they’re just adding some Mediterranean dishes, but will still be El Encuentro. My kids loved that place when they were little.

  2. Beat me to it slopenick. Are we neighbors?

We will miss Encuentro, although we may be the only ones, as the place was pretty empty most of the time. The folks there are super nice and they let our GC’s guys use their bathroom every day for months until we got running water in our house. My daughter loves their steak and is very upset (she’s not a budding foodie). I hope the new places are good neighbors as well as good restaurants.

  3. The new place – Park Slope Bistro? – is on 14th as well, cattycorner to El Encuentro in the old bodega space. Two blocks down, i.e. 6th and 12th, is Magnolia.
