crime-brooklyn-1108.jpgIt may not feel like it, given all the anecdotal evidence to the contrary, but crime is down 4% this year, according to Kings County DA Charles “Joe” Hynes. Hynes dropped the stat at yesterday’s quarterly gathering of the Real Estate Roundtable at the Brooklyn Historical Society. Of course, “crime” is a pretty broad category. After all, murders are up in the borough as a whole.

  1. Oh please. As if anecdotes from nameless faceless people on a blog are more reliable than statistics from police. Like it’s just so totally impossible for an anonymous nobody hiding behind the name “What” on a blog to make up a story about somebody “almost” getting mugged, then a moment later to make it sound more scary, suddenly the story is the person “almost” got shot. Because like, the part about the gunfire is secondary to this guy potentially losing his wallet.

  2. “What – At which intersection/block did that happen? Heard a lot of “clapping” last night as history was made.”

Can’t say but it did happen.

“A shooting during an attempted robbery? I’ve been a public defender for 15 years and such actually use of a gun rather than mere brandishment is almost unheard of. And who wouldn’t give up the goods in the face of a gun – especially while accompanied by one’s (minor?) child? I guess it could be true, but sounds a bit of a stretch.”

It’s called conditions Putnamdenizen. It’s the flow of life. I remember someone was shooting at me (years ago) and I swore to GOD I was dead. Just because you never heard of something happing that does not mean it did not happen!

There are some hard time facing America and people better Wake Up!!!

  4. Stat makes sense. Crime appears to have recently spiked so not yet reflected. At any rate, the past is irrelevant with respect to crime. We all know it’ll get worse going forward. I need to stop “sleeping” on these streets. They’re always watching you.

Wasder – You engaged me in one of What’s forums about whether I still wanted to buy in Brooklyn because of crime. Good question. That’s why I tell my wife I want to wait before we buy, deal or no deal. So much easier to get out of a rental than a deed. It’s my expectation that rents will take a significant hit as mortgage apps are turned down, jobs are lost and sales listings are converted to rentals. I’m looking to negotiate on a two-year lease for a luxury condo. This would give us plenty of time to feel out which neighborhoods remain safe enough or comfortable enough for my wife and kid, through this recession, to buy in. Or, maybe two years is not enough (depression). Either way, lower prices are not the only reason to wait it out.

What – At which intersection/block did that happen? Heard a lot of “clapping” last night as history was made.

  5. Well, now that we’ve settled that…. Joe Hynes has been speaking lately to any group that will listen, with his message being, ‘Crime will not go up in Brooklyn as the economy struggles because of the recidivism, drug treatment and other programs that I have put in place.’ I guess time will tell. I don’t have a problem with the statement turning out to be true (to the extent that any one agency can take credit).

  6. “What, did the gunman know your friend or was it random? Bummer either way obviously but curious if it was an unprovoked street crime or one with a personal connection.”

It was attempted robbery! Nothing more, nothing less! And yes Wasder this was in Asshat Hill on Election night!

  7. So now its not a robbery but an attempted murder??? Somehow I would have thought that might have come out in your origianl post if it were true.

  8. What, did the gunman know your friend or was it random? Bummer either way obviously but curious if it was an unprovoked street crime or one with a personal connection.

  9. “What does “almost” mean Asshat???”

The gunman fired twice on my friend. He was with his daughter and thank GOD no one was hit. True Story! Real Talk!
