We’ve gotten several emails (and there’ve been several comments) about problems with how the site’s been performing in recent weeks. Most notably, some people have reported the site getting hung up when they scroll down or try to type a comment. In an effort to pinpoint the problem, we’d appreciate specific feedback about issues you’ve experienced along with info about what type of computer and browser you are using. Thanks.

  1. it only happens to me if im using firefox as a browser. explorer is fine. get the random logged out thing, but i always copy and paste as i expect that on most websites. but the slow text, hanging up, etc was only on firefox

    *rob*

  2. Agree, this didn’t happen before the new marketplace ads (loading and unloading). Btw, this is a chance to repeat along with rf and others: I hope the commercialism doesn’t affect the soul and h(Art) of brownstoner!

  3. IE, couple of times yestaerday I wrote posts that got rejected. Error message regarding not being able to find some sort of “object” I seem to recall.

And loading is always slow, I get a bit of a pic, and then I scroll and the pic smears all the way down the page for a period of time before loading resumes.

  4. “Attempting to replay to a post in the forum yesterday afternoon, got a mysql server query error”

Ditto, on a updated firefox 3.6.8 / windows7 new ‘puter

    Nothing beyond that though…

  5. “A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

    Script: http://cdn4.specificclick.net/img/?ag=2&pb=d4361&pg=&us=&nwk=1&rnd=579418:3473

    All the time at work.

I have a relatively crappy computer at work, (XPRO, older PC but 2gb RAM), and a relatively slow consumer grade cable modem.

In addition to the slowness in scrolling, typing is impossible at any decent speed. Cursor hangs, you have to go back, a real nightmare.

This is either Firefox or IE.

I’ve found a way to run at home. Basically, I have an instance of IE JUST devoted to Brownstoner. But, it’s not just ANY IE, it’s the 64 bit IE that ships with Win7. Since I am running a quad core machine with 12GB of RAM and 3TB or storage, I guess this gives Stoner enough room/ram to run all these scripts. But IE 64 bit won’t run Flash yet, and there’s no 64 bit Firefox yet.

What you can do if you want Stoner to run fast is to turn off JavaScript in your browser. However if you do that, you will not be able to comment, since the comment boxes are dependent on Java (fortunately for Mr. B!)

And yes, sometimes when I comment it tells me I need to register and I lose it all. So I try and make a practice of hitting Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C before posting, so I can paste back if I lose it all (like I’m about to do now)

  6. Still have the crashing problem with crappy Internet Explorer on my work computer that I emailed you about a few weeks ago. IE crashes very early in the loading of the main page. The Forum page works fine so I think it has to be an ad that’s causing the problem. The site works fine on Firefox on my home computer though. At work I’m reduced to enduring the intermittent AT&T 3G service in the FIDI area on my iPhone to access the site.
