This Sunday is the closing party for Blue Marble’s flagship store at 420 Atlantic. It is going to be a fundraiser for Blue Marble Dreams, an initiative to create an ice cream shop in Rwanda to spur economic growth. Actors Billy Crudup, Sarah Paulson, Michael Showalter and others will be there. The party is from six to 11pm and is $25 per person or $50 per family. And don’t worry: you can still satisfy your Blue Marble cravings at their Court Street location.
This seems like an April Fool’s joke.
very, very wierd.
What flavors are most popular in Rwanda???
Hi Rob, Alexis from Blue Marble here. I hope you’ll read my post in the thread from the previous Blue Marble-related post. Also, it’s Rwanda, not Rawanda.
As for the project in Rwanda, I’m happy to report that we opened our doors to Sweet Dreams – the country’s first-ever ice cream shop – on June 5. Through this initiative (which was conceived by a Rwandan), we’re offering full-time employment, comprehensive entrepreneurial training, and English and computer classes to several dozen Rwandan women. We’re also supporting local farmers and producers and doing our best to contribute to the local economy. Sure, ice cream is an unorthodox approach, but it’s working. The community has embraced the shop and its success has outpaced our most optimistic expectations.

Actually the ice cream parlor has been up and running in Butare (Rwanda’s second-largest city, sort of its university town) since June and is a pretty heartwarming and inspiring story. It’s run by a women’s cooperative, they source all the ingredients locally, and have created a lot of joy in a country that needs all it can get. Check it out: http://www.bluemarbledreams.org. Can you tell I’m on the board of the nonprofit that launched the project?
Jester, not sure ice cream in Subsaharan Africa is sustainable. It’s a nice idea though, and I’m sure the people involved in the project are happy.
Sounds like microlending. Why not.
shit – i watched hotel rwanda – seems like the last thing they need is yuppie brooklyn ice cream
