This just in from a tipster: A man who’d been hanging off the south side of the Brooklyn Bridge by Old Fulton Street has just been rescued. “He tried to jump, the two NYPD on the side with him grabbed him, struggled, and managed to pull him up,” he writes. “Big cheers from onlookers!”

  1. I didnt say it was “motivated” by selfishness – I said it was a “selfish act.”
How can I say what the “motivations” really are (I cant see the operation of another’s mind) – but leaving friends and families with the loss, guilt and (often) mess (of many kinds) – is selfish – sorry, not really debatable

  2. A member of my immediate family offed himself in his own backyard 6 years ago and I do not consider what he did to be “selfish”. Making a spectacle out of it on the other hand…..

:-/ yeah, sorry mentally ill people (and people who randomly get sick on the traon) have to inconvenience you. NYC is one of the most stressful places in the world to live (tho i find it the least stressful otherwise i wouldnt be here, but that’s a discussion for another day) for many people. whoever this person is, my good wishes go out to their friends and family and i hope that none of them beat themselves up over this tragic incident. i did it for many years; the whole what if’s… there really are no what if’s.

    *rob*

  4. Same thing on the Willamsburg bridge last week. Not only are people who do this sick in the head, obviously, they are also incredibly selfish. The time and money to rescue him comes out of taxpayers pockets. Same as those who are sick who insist on taking the subway during rush hour! Come on people, let’s be more considerate.

  5. The percentage of fatal falls goes over fifty percent from the 4th floor. It’s been a long time since I heard the percentages, but I do remember it was a large increase, something like 30% fatality rate from the third to 85% from the fourth. That looks like it’s close to four floors to me. While I know it’s fun to be flippant about things like this, what if it was a friend? Would the hipster comment be funny?
